Head of Youth Services - Teaneck Public Library Job Title: Head of Youth Services Status: Full-Time, Exempt Compensation: $85,000 - $103,000, commensurate with experience Location: Teaneck Public Library, 840 Teaneck Road, Teaneck, NJ 07666 Teaneck Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, innovative, and experienced librarian to lead our dynamic Youth Services Department. The Head of Youth Services is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of library services and programs for children, teens, and their families. This leadership position supervises a dedicated team of youth services staff and works closely with the Library Director to align departmental goals with the library’s mission and strategic priorities. The Head of Youth Services will have the opportunity to oversee a wide range of engaging programs and services. RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide leadership, vision, and strategic direction for youth services, including children’s and teen services. Supervise, mentor, and evaluate Youth Services staff, ensuring that team members are effectively performing their job responsibilities. Coordinate scheduling, performance evaluations, coaching, discipline, training, and development of Youth Services staff. Plan, implement, and evaluate a wide range of engaging programs for children and teens, including storytimes, summer reading initiatives, school partnerships, and special events. Manage the youth collections, ensuring materials are current, diverse, and responsive to community needs. Provide expert reader's advisory services to children, teens, and families, helping them discover the best books based on individual reading preferences and interests. Stay up to date with trends in youth literature and continuously evaluate and curate collections to meet the evolving needs of the community. Actively build and maintain partnerships with schools, childcare providers, and other local organizations. Develop and manage the Youth Services budget in coordination with the Director. Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging space for youth and families. Stay informed on trends, technologies, and best practices in youth librarianship and public library services. Manage staff performance, including conducting regular evaluations, offering coaching, and addressing any disciplinary issues when necessary. Work closely with other departments and actively contribute to library-wide planning and programming as a member of the management team. Serve on public service desks and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program. NJ Professional Librarian’s certificate Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in youth services in a public library setting. Demonstrated leadership, communication, and team-building skills. Strong knowledge of children’s and young adult literature, programming, and developmental needs. Experience in community outreach and public service. Proficiency with library technologies and digital resources. Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus.

REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to work in a public library environment, which may involve prolonged periods of sitting, standing, computer use, and lifting up to 25 lbs. Library experience within the BCCLS consortium is preferred but not required. A valid New Jersey driver’s license is required at the time of appointment.

COMPENSATION/ SCHEDULE:

This is a full-time (35 hours/week), salaried, exempt, non-union position. The salary range is $85,000 – $103,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Teaneck Public Library offers a competitive benefits package, including generous paid leave, health and dental insurance, and New Jersey Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). A regular evening shift and occasional weekend hours on a rotating basis are required. The work schedule is subject to change based on library needs.
