Position Overview:
Rivus Consulting LLC seeks an on-call Archaeology Principal Investigator to join our growing and dynamic environmental team. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop and expand cultural resources services within the company, shaping its growth and building client relationships. Rivus provides engineering, environmental, management, and technology consulting services to a range of federal, state, and municipal clients. We specialize in water resources, restoration, natural resources consulting, sustainable land development, landscape architecture, program/construction management, and technology solutions.

We are looking for an experienced on-call Archaeology Principal Investigator to support our Dallas/Fort Worth area office while working remotely. The candidate will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, water resource scientists, natural resources specialists and geospatial analysts to serve a variety of clients, including federal, state, and local governments, department of transportation (DOTs), and private entities. This role will support the planning and design of water resources-focused projects for transportation, utility, and other developments at various scales.

The ideal candidate will have experience managing complex projects, building client relations, assisting with proposal writing and business development, directing archaeological fieldwork, and preparing reports.

Responsibilities:

Technical
  • Serve as the primary author for technical reports, research designs, and other documentation.
  • Engage and coordinate with regulatory agency representatives, including State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs), Native American Tribes, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure client satisfaction by understanding project scopes, leveraging cultural resource management expertise, and delivering high-quality work on time and within budget.
  • Develop and manage budgets, research designs, work plans, schedules, analyses, and reports for archaeological projects.
  • Direct, oversee, or coordinate archaeological field surveys, including pedestrian surveys, archaeological monitoring, subsurface investigations, and tribal consultation surveys.
  • Manage field crews and uphold high standards for fieldwork quality and data collection accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the Antiquities Code of Texas.
  • Draft and file permit applications with the Texas Historical Commission (THC) and other pertinent agencies
Marketing, Public Representation, and Client Development
  • Contribute ideas and recommendations to strategic plans.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain client relationships.
  • Identify business opportunities and develop scopes of work and effective proposals.
  • Establish and maintain industry connections and strategic partnerships.
  • Attend and present at trade shows, conferences, and seminars.
  • Maintain professional visibility through active participation in relevant organizations.
Required Experience/Capabilities
  • Thorough knowledge of NEPA and Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended), the Archaeological Resources Protection Act, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, and other key laws and regulations related to historic preservation and archaeological resources.
  • Experience with local cultural history and material culture in the South-Central and Southwestern United States, including Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and New Mexico
  • Experience filing Texas antiquities permits.
  • Experience consulting and communicating with regulatory agencies, including SHPOs, Native American Tribes, and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Ability to plan and implement cultural resources survey projects independently.
  • Strong leadership, technical writing, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency with ESRI software suite and various digital field recording tools and platforms.
Desired Experience:

  • Project experience working on federal (e.g., BLM, USFS, NPS, USACE) and state lands.
  • Expertise in the latest equipment, technology, and methodologies for recording and documenting archaeological sites and artifacts.
  • Familiarity with health and safety protocols.
  • Proven ability to effectively lead teams with diverse personalities and backgrounds.
  • Laboratory experience with the ability to identify, analyze, and document artifacts from both prehistoric and historic periods.
  • Experience fostering and enhancing client relationships while identifying and developing new business opportunities with both public and private sector clients.

Education/Professional Credentials :
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) professional standards for archaeology.
  • Graduate degree (M.A. or PhD) in Anthropology/Archaeology or closely related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive professional experience, with at least (2) as a field supervisor or higher.
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA).
  • Current pre-certification with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in relevant work categories, or the ability to become pre-certified.
