Role Summary

This high-trust role involves the professional and courteous transportation of a limited number of family members and key executives between office locations and homes predominately within the State of Michigan utilizing a collection of vehicles provided by the company and/or family. The roles also encompass the relocation of vehicles without passengers to various destinations, and general support of the maintenance of vehicles.

All vehicles operated by the professional driver will be owned, insured and maintained by the family/company. The driver will not be required to or allowed to operate their personal vehicle in service of any duties under this role at any time for any reason.

A successful candidate will have a strong track record of safe vehicle operation, respect for passenger safety and comfort, an ability to exercise restraint in the operation of rare high-performance vehicles, and adherence to strict confidentiality agreements including abstaining from any social media or recording of their association with passengers and vehicles.

This position is for an independent contractor, paid hourly, but after one year of service may evolve into a salaried role inclusive of a comprehensive benefits package based on the driver’s professional performance and the continuing needs of the company/family. Initially, hours and days of service will be irregular and intermittent, but coordinated in advance, and with the understanding the contractor may always decline days and/or hours at their sole discretion due to availability or personal reasons.

This is not a full time position. This is not an on-call or on-demand role; activity is generally coordinated in advance with the driver based on their availability.

Job Requirements

- Authorization to work in the United States of America and achievement of high school diploma or equivalent.

- Ability to read, write and communicate fluently in English in a respectful and collaborative manner.

- Possession of an unrestricted valid Driver’s License or motor vehicle operator license valid within Michigan.

- Existing Michigan Chauffeur or CDL Endorsement or ability to obtain Michigan endorsement within 60 days of offer.

- Ability and willingness to lift up to 60 pounds to assist with loading and unloading of bags and luggage.

- Willingness to consent to pre-employment and on-going regular drug testing.

- Ability to furnish driving records from current and past states driver is licensed to operate within.

- Willingness to consent to background check including comprehensive multi-state driving history and credit reporting.

- Agreement to confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement governing all passenger conversations and travel activity.

- Willingness to travel and respect for individual privacy.

- Driver will be issued company/family credit card for all fuel, maintenance, travel expenses, and any costs related to passenger amenities. While the financial obligation of the card is held by the family/company, the candidate must not have a disqualifying credit history with American Express for issuance and possession of a credit card.

 

Desired Experience, Qualifications & Behavior

§ Calm, sensible, patient and defensive driving demeanor.

§ Strong experience (10+ years) operating vehicles in Michigan winter weather conditions including ice and snow.

§ Experience with large sport utility vehicles and/or performance vehicles in a variety of weather conditions.

§ Experience with automatic and manual transmissions, diesel drivetrains and engine braking under grade situations. There are no semi-truck driving requirements in this role, however there is a Ford F-350 Super Duty Limited with a diesel engine that is utilized at times.

§ Exercise of restraint when operating/relocating high performance vehicles without passengers.

§ Ability to maintain courteous behavior at all times, including when encountering aggressive/offensive drivers.

§ Constant adherence to confidentiality, especially when encountering interested or curious on-lookers.

 

General Duties

- Transportation of private passengers (family members and executives from family companies) and relocation of vehicles without passengers as requested and as available in a safe, professional, and courteous manner.

- Fueling, washing (touchless or handwash only), and interior/exterior cleaning of assigned vehicles according to all policies and standards set forth by the company.

- Early and punctual preparation of vehicles prior to individual or chauffeured use by heating/cooling prior to occupancy, stocking beverages or other amenities as requested by a passenger or learned as customary by family members, executives, or key personnel.

- Assistance with loading and unloading of bags and luggage for passengers.

- Opening/closing doors as appropriate and provisioning of umbrella protection when necessary and covered entry/departure is unavailable for passengers.

- When traveling with vehicles and access to garage or covered storage is not available, driver will be responsible for cleaning, snow removal and ice scraping prior to ensure visibility, safe and presentable appearance of vehicle prior to roadway operation or passenger entry.

- Support in the tracking, scheduling and communication of manufacturer’s recommended maintenance of assigned vehicles.

- Coordination and movement of vehicles to dealerships or service providers for maintenance activities such as oil changes, inspections, and preventative maintenance.

- Regularly checking and ensuring remediation of any manufacturer recalls or voluntary notices for assigned vehicles.

- Advance notification of planned or required maintenance of any vehicle to support planning of trips.

- Adherence to and maintaining of a professional, hygienic appearance at all times while on duty and in accordance with a mutually agreed upon dress code.

- Understanding and agreement that certain passengers will utilize transportation for travel to hunting and sporting events involving firearms and ammunition.

- Understanding and agreement that while on duty it is desirable to avoid engaging in any political or religious conversations with passengers.

- Maintain a mobile phone with voice, data and texting service, compatible with modern automotive systems to enable hands-free communication, navigation.

- Refraining from eating or drinking while operating the vehicle except for water, coffee and tea.

 

Compensation & Benefits

§ Hourly, Independent Contractor under a 1099 Basis.

§ $25.00 - $32.00 Hourly Dependent upon Experience, Qualifications & Licensing.

§ All trips are paid a minimum of three (3) hours even if actual duration is less.

§ Duty over eight (8) hours per day will be paid at 1.5X time hourly rate.

§ Duty on Federal Holidays are paid at 1.5X hourly rate from start of duty.

§ Contractor will receive either a (1) $30.00/month stiped to accommodate business use of a personal phone or (2) a company provided Apple iPhone with voice, data, and text to support general duties, at their election.

§ Contractor will be provided with a $500 annual clothing allowance to support mutually agreed upon dress code.

§ Possibility of Hire with Salary & Benefits Package after minimum of one (1) Year of Service.

 

Example Trips

Most activity will occur in Michigan, in the Grand Rapids area with regular near weekly trips to the greater Detroit area. Generally, the position will involve the individual driving to the vehicle garage in the Grand Rapids area, parking their personal vehicle and preparing the requested vehicle for the day’s requirements. The role will report to one primary family member and involve regular transportation of two family members, their children and occasional transportation of executives or other key personnel from various family-owned companies.

 

Day Trips w/ Return of Vehicle

1. One way transportation of passengers(s) between homes or businesses and returning without passengers.

2. Transportation of one to two passengers to various business meetings with return of passengers to home or office after meetings conclude. Position is paid during all waiting.

3. Transportation of family members to airport hangar with return of vehicle to garage without passengers and vice versa upon family member return.

 

Day Trips without Return of Vehicle

1. Relocation of a vehicle between family homes or businesses in Greater Grand Rapids and Greater Detroit Area without passengers, and company paid transportation of driver back to starting point via car service. The position is paid during all return travel.

2. Transportation of a family or company vehicle to airport hangar for use by an individual upon their return without a chauffeur. The company provides paid transportation of driver back to starting point via car service after dropping off vehicle.

3. Paid travel via company paid car service to retrieve a vehicle at a specific destination and then relocate to another home or business with or without passenger(s).

 

Overnight Trips

1. Transportation of passengers from Grand Rapids to Chicago for meetings/events over the course of one to three days where driver is provided private room and board within same hotel; remains accessible for transportation during the trip, and then returns home. The position is paid for the duration of the trip.

2. Paid air transportation to an out of state destination to retrieve a vehicle driven by a family member for the purpose of returning it home over one to three days. The company provides meals and lodging for the duration of the journey and the position is paid during the journey.

3. Relocation of a vehicle to a vacation or conference destination without passengers, for use by family during trip. In some instances, driver may support transportation requirements of the family during the trip if amenable to driver’s availability. In others, family may use the vehicle without a driver who may immediately return via company provided air travel and retrieve vehicle at later date.

These are examples and day trips or overnight trips are generally planned in advance and in coordination with the driver. While last minute needs may arise from time to time, this is not an on-call or on-demand role and the role does not entail multiple passengers reaching out to the driver. All activity is coordinated and scheduled with the driver through a primary family member.
